Divorce In Black Families : A Candid Conversation With Dr. Percy Ricketts

Studies consistently confirm that roughly 50% of first marriages end in divorce within the first 8 -10 years and that second and third marriages end much quicker. Regardless of cause, the break-up of any family is a major life stressor, to which many adults often find adjusting problematic. When it comes to the children that are involved, many spend years feeling guilty about the break-up of their families. The trauma and pain that result, often affect them throughout their lives. Insofar as Black families are concerned, many are already exposed to numerous other challenges in this society. Hence, for them, when a family breaks up, this additional major challenge often makes things much worse. A disproportionate number of Black children are raised by single mothers. Their fathers are either not very involved in their lives, or they are totally uninvolved - a situation that leads to numerous emotional, social and other concerns. Sadly, despite continuous attention over the years, evidence points to a worsening trend. Unless there is a drastic change in this trend in the very near future, many parents will have significant reasons to worry about their children's welfare. On this DVD, Psychotherapist and Divorce consultant, Dr. Percy Ricketts, shares some of his thoughts regarding relationships and divorce in Black families.
